Hyperbitcoinization is underway, RFK seeks Bitcoin donations and other news: Hodler’s Digest, May 14-20

Hyperbitcoinization coming, says Bitcoin OG as ‘wholecoiners’ hit 1 million

Bitcoin has crossed a significant threshold this month — there are over 1 million addresses that hold at least 1 BTC. Data from Glassnode shows an escalating pattern with regard to the amount of so-called Bitcoin “wholecoiners.” If the trend continues, Bitcoin price escalation could soon make buying it not only a luxury but something potentially unattainable altogether, according to Adam Back, co-founder and CEO of Bitcoin firm Blockstream. This hyperbitcoinization refers to the moment when the benefits of Bitcoin for financial transactions will eventually lead to the replacement of established financial institutions by a public-driven system, with Bitcoin becoming the world’s default value system.

FTX pursues $244M clawback from ‘wildly inflated’ Embed acquisition deal

FTX’s leadership is looking to claw back more than $240 million from insiders and executives that benefited from FTX’s “wildly inflated” acquisition of stock-clearing platform Embed in September. According to court filings, Embed’s own chief technology officer, Laurence Beal, was stunned that FTX paid so much for the company after one short meeting with its then-CEO, Michael Giles. Beal described FTX’s due diligence process with a cowboy emoji. Lawyers accused FTX insiders of disproportionate payouts to Embed shareholders, including $55 million paid to its CEO.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to accept campaign donations in Bitcoin

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be the first presidential candidate in United States history to accept campaign donations in Bitcoin, he announced during his first appearance as a presidential candidate at the Bitcoin 2023 conference. He praised the cryptocurrency as a “symbol of democracy and freedom” during the event. By having attended the Bitcoin event, RFK Jr. is not only targeting voters but also a potential source of millions of dollars in donations. The democratic candidate is incumbent President Joe Biden.

Voyager bankruptcy plan approved, customers may recover 35.7% of claims initially

Voyager’s bankruptcy plan was approved on May 17 and its customers could now expect to receive 35.72% of their claims initially, either in crypto via the Voyager app or in cash, after 30 days. According to Voyager, it had $1.33 billion of assets for recovery as of May 8, of which $629.8 million was available for initial recovery, on claims of $1.8 billion. If FTX/Alameda Research’s claim for preferential recovery is unsuccessful, creditors’ initial recovery could increase. For that claim, Voyager is holding back $445 million. Voyager may also be able to recover funds from bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.

Cryptocurrency trading platform Coin Cafe has been ordered to repay $4.3 million to its users after allegedly charging “exorbitant and undisclosed fees” for storing Bitcoin on the platform — leading to some accounts being drained entirely of their funds. One New York investor incurred fees exceeding $10,000 in a single month, while another investor was hit with fees amounting to $51,000 over a span of 13 months, said the office of the New York State Attorney General.

Ripple vs. SEC: Could newly released documents tip the balance?

The ongoing case of the Securities and Exchange Commission v Ripple Labs could have a significant impact on the future of cryptocurrency regulations.

Ripple first popped up in 2012 with the promise of providing financial institutions and other entities with faster, more affordable clearance of cross-border fund transfers. To that end, Ripple created the XRP Ledger and a cryptocurrency called XRP (XRP) to function as its native coin and facilitate transactions.

On Dec. 22, 2020, the SEC sued Ripple, alleging that the firm selling XRP represented an unregistered securities offering.

Ripple co-founder and former CEO Chris Larsen and current CEO Brad Garlinghouse were also named in the SEC’s charges.

Most entities on the receiving end of SEC enforcement actions choose to settle. In this case, however, Ripple chose to fight the charges — at great expense — and take the matter to court.

Stablecoin survival: Navigating the future amid global de-dollarization

It is an empirical fact that the United States dollar is continuing to lose its dominant role as the global reserve currency, but what might happen to the stablecoin market should it be superseded?

According to data from the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. dollar now accounts for just over 58% of global foreign exchange reserves, a considerable decrease from the 71% share it had in 2001.

Jeremy Allaire — the CEO of USD Coin (USDC) issuer Circle — highlighted this shift at the April 26 Consensus 2023 conference, arguing that the U.S. must implement stablecoin legislation and digitize the U.S. dollar to remain competitive amid the “very active de-dollarization taking place.”

De-dollarization refers to the process of reducing the use of the U.S. dollar in a country’s economy, and powerhouses like Russia and China are actively pursuing de-dollarization as they look to replace the U.S. dollar with digital assets, other fiat currencies, and potentially a BRICS currency between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

As an example of this de-dollarization taking place, the Chinese yuan has recently overtaken the U.S. dollar as China’s most used cross-border currency according to Bloomberg, increasing to a high of 48% of transactions after it made up nearly 0% in 2010.

Ripple, Visa join HK CBDC pilot, Huobi accusations, GameFi token up 300%: Asia Express

Hong Kong partners with 16 companies to build CBDCs

On May 18, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced the launch of the cyber Hong Kong dollar pilot project. According to officials, 16 selected companies from the financial payment and technology sectors will conduct the first round of trials this year on the feasibility of a Hong Kong dollar central bank digital currency (e-HKD). Companies included in the pilot include Alibaba Group’s Alipay Financial, Mastercard Asia, Ripple Labs, Visa, and HSBC.

The digital Hong Kong dollar will start off with six potential uses cases; comprehensive payments, programmable payments, offline payments, tokenized deposits, Web 3.0 transaction settlements, and tokenized asset settlements. The CBDC is scheduled for a three-stage approach, with the novel pilot program being an important aspect of the second stage.

However, the HKMA has not yet decided whether to officially launch the CBDC. It expects to share the results of the trials at Hong Kong Fintech Week 2023 in Q4. Yue Wai-man, chief executive of the HKMA, commented:

“Although the HKMA has not decided whether or when the CBDC will be launched, we are pleased to launch the Cyber Hong Kong Dollar Pilot Scheme. This is a good opportunity for the HKMA to join hands with the industry to explore innovative use cases and prepare for the possible launch of the CBDC in the future”

Back in Oct. 2021, Mastercard said that it would be preparing its payment infrastructure for integration with CBDCs. Likewise, Visa believes that stablecoins and CBDCs will play meaningful roles in payments and has an ongoing blockchain interoperability project related to the matter.

‘Moral responsibility’: Can blockchain really improve trust in AI?

Most technological revolutions come with an unforeseen darker side.

When Austrian-born physicists Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch first split the atom in the late 1930s, they probably didn’t anticipate their discovery would lead a few years later to the atomic bomb. The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution is arguably no different.

AI algorithms have been around for decades. The first artificial neural network, the perceptron, was invented in 1958. But the recent pace of development has been breathtaking, and with voice recognition devices like Alexa and chatbots like ChatGPT, AI appears to have gained a new public awareness.

On the positive side, AI could dramatically raise the planet’s general education level and help to find cures for devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s. But it could also displace jobs and bolster authoritarian states that can use it to surveil their populations. Moreover, if machines ever achieve “general” intelligence, they might even be trained to overturn elections and prosecute wars, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton recently warned.

“Enormous potential and enormous danger” is how United States President Joe Biden recently described AI. This followed an open letter in March from more than 1,000 tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, calling for a moratorium on AI developments like ChatGPT. The technology, they said, presents “profound risks to society and humanity.”

Top 10 crypto artist Trevor Jones on being rich, rekt and rich again: NFT Creator

With a total artwork value of $24 million Trevor Jones is one of the Top 10 most successful crypto artists worldwide.

Trevor Jones’ journey to crypto art stardom started the same way as many crypto noobs: His portfolio went way up, he failed to take profits, and the price came crashing down wiping out the paper gains.

A traditional painter, Jones always wanted to explore the intersection of art and technology, and he experimented with QR code oil paintings in 2012 and dived into AR art in 2013.

But it was his 2017 investment in Bitcoin that sparked deep curiosity in what this new world of crypto and blockchain was about. After getting rekt in 2018’s crypto winter, Jones turned his attention from crypto trader to crypto painter. He says:

“I caught that bull run and made a lot of money and then lost a lot of money in 2018. It all went up and all came crashing down.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) believes Filecoin’s native FIL token is a security, crypto asset manager Grayscale Investments has revealed.

According to the May 17 announcement, Grayscale lodged an application with the regulator to launch a Filecoin Trust product on April 14, which would provide investors with indirect exposure to the underlying FIL token.

In a comment letter from SEC staff on May 16, the regulator then warned Grayscale that FIL “meets the definition of a security” under federal law and asked them to withdraw their application for the Trust product.

Grayscale stated that under its view, Filecoin is not a security and will be sending an explanation to the SEC for its reasoning.

Crypto retail trading should be regulated as gambling: UK lawmakers

The trading of so-called “unbacked cryptoassets” such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) should be regulated as gambling rather than a financial service, a panel of British lawmakers said in a new report.

The United Kingdom is currently working on a crypto regulatory framework that would mix existing financial asset laws with new crypto-specific rules.

However, in a May 17 House of Commons Committee report, the U.K. Treasury Committee “strongly recommended” regulating retail crypto trading and investment activity as gambling, consistent with the principle of “same risk, same regulatory outcome.”

It argued the price volatility and lack of intrinsic value mean unbacked crypto assets will “inevitably pose significant risks to consumers.”

Treasury Committee chair Harriett Baldwin described Bitcoin and Ether as accounting for two-thirds of the total market capitalization of crypto assets, both of which she claimed are “unbacked.”

3 reasons why Ethereum price could struggle at the $1.9K level

Since May 12, Ether (ETH) price has been struggling to sustain its $1,800 support level as investors face pressures from a worsening crypto regulatory environment and the Ethereum network’s high gas fees. Also negatively impacting Ether’s price are 3 indicators signaling reduced demand for its decentralized applications (DApps) and a lack of leverage buying demand from professional traders.

Regulators signal their plan to further limit crypto intermediaries

According to court documents filed on May 15, the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) has given a formal response in court in relation to Coinbase’s petition for clear crypto regulation. The SEC stated that any rulemaking may take years and that enforcement actions will continue in the meantime.

On May 16, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union — comprising finance ministers of all member states — approved the highly-anticipated Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which will come into effect by mid-2024.

Some argue that the MiCA facilitates businesses growth in the region, while others focus on the privacy risks for personal users’ data, and the risks imposed for non-custodial solutions, including decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

3 reasons why Lido DAO price jumped 40% in a week — Outperforming Bitcoin, Ethereum

The price of Lido DAO (LDO) has rebounded to its three-week high of $2.21 as of May 16, up 40% when measured from its local low of $1.57, established four days ago.

This impressive double-digit recovery appeared in tandem with other top-ranking crypto assets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). However, LDO has greatly outperformed the broader crypto market (TOTAL) that's up only 4.5% since May 12.

But what are the reasons why Lido DAO is outperforming the rest of the cryptocurrency market right now? Let's take a closer look at the three biggest factors likely driving up LDO price.

Ethereum depositors' return after Shapella

The LDO price recovery coincides with the net positive inflows into Ethereum's proof-of-stake (PoS) contract in recent days.

Lido DAO is primarily an Ethereum liquid staking platform. It enables users to pool their funds to become validators on Ethereum, thus bypassing the network's requirement of depositing at least 32 ETH.

Ordinals turned Bitcoin into a worse version of Ethereum: Can we fix it?

The launch of BRC-20 tokens and Ordinals NFTs on Bitcoin has transformed the No. 1 blockchain overnight into a clunkier version of Ethereum.

The core developers and miners who signed off on the network’s Taproot upgrade in November 2021 never envisaged this would be the result. Bitcoin now suffers from many of the same problems that have bedeviled Ethereum for years, including scammy memecoins and shitcoins, NFTs of monkey pictures hogging block space and skyrocketing transaction fees.

The network is even having to deal with incidences of miner extractable value (MEV), whereby miners profit by reordering pending transactions.

Apple's new headset could put a rocket under metaverse tokens

Apple is scheduled to release its highly-anticipated mixed-reality headset in the coming weeks, a development that some believe could breathe fresh life into the metaverse industry.

In January, the native tokens of blockchain-based metaverse projects Decentraland (MANA) and Sandbox (SAND) witnessed significant surges in price, due partly to swirling rumors about Apple’s venture into mixed reality.

This trend was pointed out in a May 15 tweet from independent developer Udi Wertheimer, who in a backhanded comment to the absurdity of influencer-driven memecoins, spoke of the upcoming release as a potential driver of metaverse token prices.

In conversation with Cointelegraph, eToro market analyst Josh Gilbert believes the new headset will set  the markets ablaze, owing in large part to Apple’s proven ability to deliver high-quality, market-shifting products, stating:

“When Apple does it, they usually do it right.”

Price analysis 5/15: SPX, DXY, BTC, ETH, BNB, XRP, ADA, DOGE, SOL, MATIC

The debt ceiling negotiations in the United States are keeping traders on the edge. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently told Bloomberg on May 11 that a possible sovereign default by the U.S. government could create panic in the stock markets, resulting in heightened volatility.

The next big question troubling crypto investors is how will Bitcoin react to such an event. Bloomberg’s latest Markets Live Pulse survey indicates that Bitcoin (BTC) could be the third most preferred asset class behind Gold and U.S. Treasuries should the U.S. government fail to prevent a debt default.

Make 500% from ChatGPT stock tips? Bard leans left, $100M AI memecoin: AI Eye

Your guide to the exhiliarating and vaguely terrifying world of runaway AI development.

It’s been a hell of a couple of weeks for Melbourne digital artist Rhett Mankind, 46, who enlisted ChatGPT to create a $100 million market cap coin called Turbo, which has now inspired a Beeple artwork and saved a man’s life.

Mankind, who knows nothing about coding, gave ChatGPT a $69 budget and asked it to design a top 300 memecoin. It came up with the tokenomics, the name “TurboToad” and Mankind used Midjourney to create the logo. Thanks to interest sparked on social media, CoinGecko shows the token hit a $100M valuation and joined the Top 300.

There were a few hiccups: ChatGPT writes shitty smart contracts, and Mankind needed it to ask it for numerous rewrites based on error codes. The AI also didn’t warn Mankind to look out for the bots that bought 90% of the token supply when it launched.

That put an end to the TurboToad token and he had to crowdfund another $6669 to launch the new token Turbo, with NFT collector Pranksy helping by launching a liquidity pool on Uniswap.

Bitcoin’s recovery may trigger buying in these 4 altcoins

The S&P 500 Index (SPX) closed the week with a nominal loss of 0.29% but Bitcoin (BTC) is on target to finish the week with a deeper cut of more than 5%. The weakness in Bitcoin pulled several altcoins lower, indicating weakening sentiment.

A silver lining is Bitcoin’s solid bounce on May 12. Several analysts anticipate Bitcoin to start a recovery but monitoring resource Material Indicators sounded cautious.

In a recent analysis, they said that the lack of a strong bid from the whales at lower levels could be a concerning sign. They believe that the bullish perspective will invalidate if Bitcoin sustains below the 200-week moving average.

Over the next few days, the progress on the debt ceiling talks between leaders from Congress and the White House is expected to take center stage. The uncertainty and risks of a potential U.S. default could keep the rally in the equities markets under check but it is difficult to predict how Bitcoin and altcoins will react to all the chaos.

Bitcoin has started a corrective phase and most altcoins have broken below their respective support levels. Only a handful of cryptocurrencies are looking positive on the charts. Let’s analyze the chart of the top five cryptocurrencies that may turn up in the near term.

Can memecoins be used as real currency?

Memecoins’ security and dependability as a medium of exchange remain a topic of debate in the cryptosphere. Memecoins are said to be safe and decentralized, but some are concerned about their volatility and lack of oversight.

Memecoin proponents claim that because they are decentralized, users have more control over their money and are protected from fraud and theft. Furthermore, memecoins leverage blockchain technology, ensuring transactions are securely recorded on a decentralized ledger, making them resistant to hacking and manipulation.

Governments and central banks that implement measures to maintain stability, control inflation, and guarantee the integrity of the financial system support traditional currencies. Memecoins, on the other hand, are more vulnerable to increased volatility and market manipulation due to their decentralized structure and lack of governmental oversight.

Memecoins’ volatility is a source of worry because of their propensity for sudden, erratic price changes. As a result, using memecoins as a trustworthy medium of exchange or store of value may present difficulties. Nonetheless, these risks can be reduced with appropriate regulations in place, improving the security and dependability of memecoins as a medium of exchange.

Finding the ideal mix between regulation and innovation is essential, though. Overregulation may hinder creativity and obstruct the growth of the memecoin ecosystem. Memecoins must be made safe and reliable over the long term to be a practical form of currency; hence, it is crucial to find a legal structure that addresses concerns while fostering innovation.

Coinbase screws up, Florida bans CBDCs, and Ordinals face controversy: Hodler’s Digest, May 7-13

Top Stories This Week

Coinbase calls Pepe a ‘hate symbol,’ prompting calls to boycott the exchange

An email sent out to Coinbase customers describing the Pepe the Frog meme as a “hate symbol” co-opted by alt-right groups has drawn significant ire from the PEPE memecoin community this week. Two hours after the email was sent, the hashtag “#deletecoinbase” hit the trending sidebar on Twitter, with over 14,000 comments calling on users to boycott the exchange. Paul Grewal, the Coinbase’s chief legal officer, took to Twitter to respond to the outrage and apologized: “We screwed up and we are sorry.”

United State’s Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill restricting the use of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in the state. The new law prohibits the use of a United States federal CBDC “as money within Florida’s Uniform Commercial Code (UCC).” It also bans the use of CBDCs issued by foreign governments and calls on other states to use their commercial codes to institute similar prohibitions. DeSantis said he was spurred into action by White House studies of the new financial technology. The law takes effect on July 1.

Milady (LADYS), the self-organized memecoin based on the anime avatar NFT collection of the same name, surged by over 5,250% on May 11 after Elon Musk tweeted a meme using the imagery of a Milady NFT. The tweet also boosted the collection’s average sale price. “LADYS is a meme coin without any intrinsic value or expectation of financial return. There is no formal team or roadmap,” said the token developers. “The coin is completely useless and for entertainment purposes only.”

Bitcoin Ordinals continue to inspire debate among the Bitcoin community. Soon after their introduction in January 2023, opponents of the technology began to raise concerns about its perceived flaws, citing slow speeds and rising transaction costs. Meanwhile, its supporters claim that the ordinals provide more opportunity, improve decentralization and ensure freedom of expression. The technology enables adding text, images and code on a satoshi — the smallest unit of Bitcoin.

To catch a scammer: Kraken builds fake crypto account to ‘bait’ fraudsters

Crypto exchange Kraken has provided a novel method for flagging malicious wallets — building a fake crypto environment to “scam bait” bad actors. Kraken created the “custom environment” for popular streamer Kitboga to frustrate a scammer posing as U.S. President Joe Biden. The punchline comes when Kitboga, who portrays an elderly person with a $450,000 balance in Bitcoin, infuriates the scammer after incorrectly typing his wallet address before sending over all of the funds.

Price analysis 5/12: BTC, ETH, BNB, XRP, ADA, DOGE, MATIC, SOL, DOT, LTC

Bitcoin (BTC) extended its decline on May 12 but analyst Philip Swift, co-founder of trading suite DecenTrader and creator of data resource LookIntoBitcoin, does not expect a deep correction. He said it was “interesting to note that the long/short ratio has been climbing as price has trended down.”

One of the reasons that is keeping analysts bullish is Bitcoin’s halving, which has followed a set cycle till now and analysts expect it to continue. Citing previous cycles, investor and entrepreneur Alistair Milne, said that the time to buy was now.

What is Pepecoin and can it flip memecoins Dogecoin and Shiba Inu?

The market valuation of Pepecoin (PEPE) has dropped by 65% as of May 12, a week after its record high of $1.54 billion.

Profit-taking appears to be the primary reason behind the extreme price correction, after it rallied from almost nothing to as high as $0.00000372 after its launch on April 14, while emerging as the fastest-growing ERC-20 token in the crypto market's history.

What is PEPE?

Pepecoin captures people's attention by mimicking features of memecoins, based on popular internet memes. The most well-known is Dogecoin (DOGE), which uses the famous Shiba Inu dog meme as its logo.

Pepecoin is based on the "Pepe The Frog" meme, created by Matt Furie in his 2005 cartoon “Boys Club.” The humanoid frog went on to become a mainstream meme in the mid-2010s, with singers Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj using it in their tweets.

In 2021, BarnBridge founder Tyler Ward launched a low-resolution Pepecoin NFT collection that reaped over $60 million in sales on the OpenSea auction platform.
