What is Gresham’s law, and how does it relate to cryptocurrencies?

Gresham’s law, explained

Gresham’s law has historically influenced the circulation of currency and continues to impact economic behavior by addressing how individuals prioritize different forms of money.

Gresham’s law is a principle in economics that states that when two different forms of money are in circulation, individuals typically spend or trade the money they believe to be more valuable while hoarding or using the money they believe to be less valuable.

A common way to summarize this is “bad money drives out good.” Here, “good money” is defined as a currency that has greater intrinsic worth and is held onto, whereas “bad money” is defined as a currency that has a lower intrinsic value and people are eager to get rid of.

Although he didn’t originate the concept, Gresham’s law is named after Sir Thomas Gresham due to his role in popularizing the idea of how bad money drives out good money in monetary systems. He was a 16th-century English financier and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I.

Gresham’s law has historically been seen in a number of fiat currency systems, where debased or counterfeit coins would drive out of circulation the more valuable, legal coins because individuals would rather hold onto the higher-value currency and spend the lower-value currency. This idea is still relevant today when debating the use of cryptocurrencies and their differing levels of stability and utility.

THORChain becomes third-largest DEX as RUNE surges 50% in a week

Native asset settlement protocol THORChain has recorded the third-largest trading volume among decentralized exchanges in the last week, with users seemingly attracted to the high yield offered adjacent to its native token, RUNE (RUNE).

Over the last week, THORChain’s trading volume hit $1.32 billion, third only behind Uniswap and PancakeSwap at $10.85 billion and $2.77 billion, respectively, according to DefiLlama.

THORChain also boasts the second-largest trading volume at $334.3 million over the last 24 hours, nearly $50 million more than third-placed PancakeSwap.

Meanwhile, RUNE increased 51% over the last week and more than 200% over the last 30 days, according to CoinGecko.

THORChain’s rise past Curve Finance happened much earlier than what THORChain core developer Chad Barraford predicted, who initially estimated the flippening to happen before the end of 2023.

Take Bitcoin profits at $110K, CME tops Binance in BTC futures open interest: Hodler’s Digest, Nov. 5-11

Bitcoin’s futures market is showing an interesting shift as global derivatives marketplace the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has surpassed Binance in terms of Bitcoin futures open interest. This change occurred after Bitcoin exceeded the $37,000 mark for the first time in over 18 months.

However, James Seyffart, a research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence specializing in exchange-traded funds, questioned whether the increasing open interest in Bitcoin futures on CME would address historical concerns of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the depth of Bitcoin markets and the potential for market manipulation.

“Okay this is interesting… Does this constitute a ‘market of significant size’ now?” Seyffart stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

VET, IMX, GRT and ALGO show bullish setups as Bitcoin trades above $37K

Bitcoin (BTC) is on target to end the week with gains of about 6%, indicating continued demand from the bulls. MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor said during a speech at the 2023 Australia Crypto Convention on Nov. 10 that Bitcoin’s demand on a monthly basis could surge between two to 10 times by the end of 2024. Additionally, the halving will reduce the supply by half. Saylor expects both these events will cause the price “to adjust up.”

With almost a general consensus that Bitcoin’s price will move higher in 2024, analysts are busy projecting how high the rally could reach. Using its Terminal Price on-chain indicator, Look Into Bitcoin creator Philip Swift said that Bitcoin could hit at least $110,000 in its next bull cycle.
